en rincon hay la casa enhasa
coqui coqui coqui coqui
the waves come in
sliding the moonlight
to me from the west

the girl vero from aguadilla
touched the small of my back
and hustled me a cig
and called me an angel
es verdad, claro vero

there was a woman who painted
the sea with the sand of the sea
the canvas was blue and gritty—
she used orange clay from the island
and purple clay from the mountains
and mixed them with coconut charcoal
like a taino painting herself
