(December 2023. I spent a lot of November-January beat in New York driving the Red Bus with Josh. Fell more in love with the city in this period than ever before. The energy! The people! The buildings! NEW YORK! I think this poem captures it quite well. My favorite lines unto themselves are the two with a comma each juxtaposing two parts of the line. I’m adding this poem to the website out of order (haven’t yet updated poetry from September 2023-onward) because New York deserves a great poem on the map! I will fill in the rest of the 50+ September 2023- Now poems whenever I have time to catch my breath.)

nyc

this new life lifted upon its own changing
shoulders concrete and tense as a man’s
endless hunger, wind between skyscrapers
starving all kings in service of building what
ever is higher than ruling and worth the heel
on the pavement pushing rich and poor alike
upwards, clouds we would mirror in wet clay
